Ashlyn shivered at the thought of Reed slamming into a concrete wall, at the thought of how much more the wreck could have cost him.

She placed her hand over his, causing his fork to ding against the dessert plate. “Was your face laceration your only injury?”

His expression tightened. “No. I was in a coma for about two weeks. When I regained consciousness, I couldn’t feel anything from my waist down.”

Two weeks in a coma. Unable to feel below his waist.

Ashlyn’s stomach knotted. “Oh Reed! I’m so sorry. That must have been horrible for you.”

He snorted. “It wasn’t the best of times.”

“Was the driver seriously injured?”

“She sustained internal injuries, but recovered quickly enough.”

“She?” She hated that she asked, yet couldn’t help herself. But hadn’t she known when he’d said that he’d been arguing with someone? Of course Reed would have been with a woman.

“My fiancée.”

The knot inside her imploded into a tight wad of nothingness. Reed had been engaged. Maybe he still was. Seriously, what did she know about the man? He was as tight-lipped as a mummy. Was that why he’d walked away from her? Because there was someone else in his life?

“Where is she now?”

He shrugged. “I’ve not talked to her since before the wreck.”

“You haven’t…before the…since you argued…” Ashlyn shook her head, not quite able to take in what he was saying. “She didn’t...”

Although he looked nonchalant, his laugh sounded bitter. “Apparently she visited me while I was unconscious, didn’t like what the doctors told her, and decided that the injuries she’d sustained had been a blessing in disguise.”

“The injuries she sustained?” Ashlyn frowned in confusion. Had the woman suffered brain damage? Because, really, what sane woman would walk away from this man? Would have not been there for him as he fought to regain consciousness?

The skin pulled tight over his cheekbones. “She miscarried our baby.”

The raw pain in his voice pierced Ashlyn’s heart. She could only imagine how much he suffered at the loss of his child, especially when he’d been dealing with so many other losses at the time.

“Oh Reed,” she repeated, squeezing his hand. “I really am sorry.”

Not that she wanted a baby, but having seen him interact with his basketball team, with Lizzie, Ashlyn knew Reed would have been a good father. He was the kind of man who should have a dozen kids. Her heart squeezed tight. His child had been killed in the same car accident that had permanently scarred his face, the accident that had forever changed his life.

“Is that why you don’t want your scar corrected?” she asked softly. “As a reminder of the child you lost?”

He considered her a moment. “That’s a good question. A scenario I hadn’t really considered, but I don’t think so. I don’t want my scar fixed, because I’m not like the rest of the world. Looks aren’t what my life is about. Not what I’m about. I don’t ever want to forget that.”

She let what his words soak in but still couldn’t connect the dots.
